Public Speaking and Introduction to Debate

Public-SpeakingThis course provides a rough glimpse for middle school students intending to enter a debate team within any high school participating in the Bergen County Debate League. The importance of public speaking and presentation skills both in academia and in professional settings implies that today’s student must be acquainted with such skills if he or she is to succeed in the 21st Century networked global economy.

Through exploration of current controversial topics such as eminent domain, freedom of speech, income inequality, education policy, trade policy, health-care policy, firearms control, the war against narcotics, and other topics, students will compile a weekly presentation arguing for a position in support of or against a certain proposition.

Students will also write a brief one page essay in support of their positions. Given that this  for middle school students intending to enter a debate team within any high school participating in the Bergen County Debate League. As such, techniques in constructing arguments and counterarguments will be covered.
